Increasing population, rising standards of living and climate change are long term trends which exacerbate the problem of ensuring that everyone has access to potable water. Tourism happens in many water scarce areas and, in recent years, Sao Paulo and Cape Town have experienced crises which had an adverse impact on arrivals. Tourism businesses will generally be able to pay more than most of the local community for water and this raises some major challenges. Water is essential to life, so what can the industry do to ensure sufficient supplies for themselves and for local communities.
