Food and drink provide more than mere sustenance for visitors – they can be used as tools to foster understanding and even peace. At the most basic, food and drink are excellent ways for travelers to meet and understand the local people and culture. Travelers don’t even need to know the local language, because food and drink can “do the talking.” In the Kingdom of Jordan, there is an unwritten practice of karam, which is the Arabic word for generosity. The general meaning is that “the guest is king.” Wherever you go in the country, visitors experience this extreme form of hospitality. Karam is afforded even to complete strangers, and the effect on the visitor is profound. Visitors leave Jordan with an impression of a respectful, hospitable and peace-loving country, and the desire to share this profound experience with their friends, family and colleagues. Attend this session to learn how to leverage your area’s food and drink offering as gastrodiplomacy for visitors.
