Job TitleMinister of Tourism

About

Konrad Mizzi is the Minister of Tourism, and the key architect of many of the initiatives that have transformed Malta’s economy from a relative backwater to the fastest-growing in Europe.  He is currently leading the revitalisation of the national airline, Air Malta, which recently turned an operational profit for the very first time, under his leadership.

One of Joseph Muscat’s most trusted allies, Mizzi previously served as Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister. He has also served as Minister for Energy and Conservation of Water and as Minister for Health. In those posts he transformed the energy sector with a revolutionary Private-Public Partnership with China (Shanghai Electric Power) – turning Malta’s outdated heavy fuel oil power into cleaner, greener alternatives.

He undertook similar reforms of the water industry (in one of the world’s most water-stressed countries), introducing ‘New Water’ through an innovative process for converting raw sewage to high quality water for industry and agriculture.  In Health, he succeeded in bringing some of the world’s top providers right to Maltese shores, while eliminating out-of-stock medicines and long waiting lists.

One of the most popular members of the Labour Government, Mizzi was elected in parliament in the March 2013 General Election and re-elected again in June 2017, playing a key strategic role in both historic, landslide victories for the Party.

Prior to entering politics, Konrad Mizzi was Partner and head of the energy and Infrastructure Practice for Europe and Africa  with Pcubed, a global leader in programme management. Before that, he was with Deloitte and Touche and BT. In that time, Konrad Mizzi led various, high-level change projects in the UK, including the forging of an Alliance between seven energy companies which improved services and realised large savings. He has also developed an interest in regenerating areas of severe deprivation and economic stress.

Konrad Mizzi holds and M.A. (with Distinction) and a Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham. He also holds a B.Sc from the University of Malta, and a Diploma in Finance. He won a Chevening Scholarship from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the United Kingdom.
