About

Ben is the Founder of the Flipflopi Project, building a pioneering 60ft sailing dhow entirely from plastic waste collected from beach clean ups along the Kenya coast.

Its name comes from the fact they are using flipflops – the biggest component of their beach clean-ups to cover the entire outer layer of their 45 tonne dhow.

Prior to building colourful boats out of plastic, Ben spent a decade building a travel business focused on Africa, where he witnessed the alarming degradation of the Indian Ocean coastline caused by plastics and flip flops in particular. As a direct response, The Flipflopi Project is committed to changing the huge lag between the scale of the ocean plastics problem and the level of awareness about it amongst everyday consumers.
