Job TitleCo-founder

Company NameInstitute of Travel and Tourism of Gambia

Adama Bah worked as hotelier for 25 years and finally took voluntary retirement as a Manager from The Bungalow Beach Hotel, The Gambia.

It was in 1995 when Adama Bah formed a small advocacy group in Gambia known as Gambia Tourism Concern (GTC). During a GTC Workshop on Community Based Tourism Enterprises the idea of creating a trade association of small scale enterprises in tourism (ASSET) emerged.

Adama helped found the organisation and the International Centre for Responsible Tourism secured Tourism Challenge Fund monies for an initiative to work in partnership with the private sector and government to create better economic and social relationships between the informal sector, poor producers, the industry and tourists. Within three years this project was able to organise the informal sector, build its capacity and improved the earnings of poor producer groups.

Furthermore Adama Bah founded the International Centre for Responsible Tourism-West Africa. It was established as a network of tourism professionals and regional training centre in West Africa to help the training of a significant number of Gambian and West African men and women on issues of Responsible Tourism. The centre working with ICRT, UK secured funding from the commonwealth for 23 West Africans to do MSc distance learning course with Leeds Metropolitan University in UK.

Given his background in designing and implementing different projects for small scale tourism enterprises and for communities engaged in tourism, Adama Bah won an international award in 2004 as the person who made The Greatest Contribution to Responsible Tourism. It took place in London at the World Travel Market.

Adama co-founded the Institute of Travel and Tourism of Gambia and since it was founded in 2008 has been the Chairman on the board of directors.

Adama Bah, until 2013 has been the project coordinator of The Travel Foundation for Gambia.
